New actuation technology developed by Kyntronics combines the advantages of hydraulic power with the advantages of servo-control resulting in an “all-in-one” actuator that out performs alternative approaches including EMAs. It is generally recognized that hydraulic technology provides the highest amount of force output per unit of space envelope. This is often referred to as “force-density.” EMA technology is presented as an alternative to hydraulic cylinder actuators although there are a number of shortcomings to using EMAs in applications that have traditionally used hydraulic cylinders.
The Kyntronics SHA is a complete actuation system that combines the power of a hydraulic cylinder with the precision of servo control while eliminating many of the inherent disadvantages that traditional hydraulic cylinder actuators and ball screw / roller screw actuators have.
Both the Kyntronics SHA and alternative EMA technologies incorporate servo motors and drive/motion controllers. The primary difference between SHA and EMA technology is that the SHA utilizes an integral hydraulic pump and cylinder to move the load, while the EMA uses a gearbox and mechanical screw / ballnut system to move the load.
